When did the development for the My Little Pony game begin?

[Gustav] Development with this license began in January 2012.

Wow! Having worked on this game for so long, you must have some favorite features.. What’s your favorite thing about the game?

[Fawzi] My favorite thing is how the ponies interact with each other and create small circles in which they talk, dance, and play around as well as how the world reacts to the player’s touch. It really makes the game world come to life and makes the player believe that they’re actually taking part in the show.

[Gustav] Definitely! This and how we captured the core ponies personalities through the animations and their quests.

There are so many different ponies in PonyVille. Can you take us briefly through the process of creating them from design to implementation?

[Gustav] Since the characters were already established on the show, we had to do very little conceptualizing.  We received the details for most of the ponies from Hasbro (the rest we had to find on the fan-made wikis, as we wanted a really big variety!) and then had a very highly skilled team of 3-D artists create them for the game.

Once the ponies were approved by Hasbro, they were brought to life by our amazing animators. Then, it was up to the programmers to incorporate them into the world. Our lead programmer wrote the awesome behavior AI that makes the ponies group together in circles and have conversations and interact with each other.

The game really follows the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic storyline, so we have to ask: what was the most challenging feature you brought from the show, to the game?

[Gustav] One of the biggest challenges was around deciding the final look of the “Darkness/Night Time” shrouding the world. This is co-incidentally one of the challenges faced by the team creating the TV show as well. At one point it was almost dropped, because they thought it would be too scary. Luckily, they did not, as it adds the contrast needed to make a good story. ☺

When creating the game we went through MANY iterations and version of the darkness/nighttime, with everyone having a strong argument for their version. It took almost the entire development time to finally decide on the version you see in the game.

Do you have any tips & tricks for our players out there?

[Fawzi] Make sure you come back as often as you can to check on your village and keep it in order.

We love to hear all about the way ponies were brought to life in this game. Tell us more about the creative process. Do you have any fun inside stories from the development of the game?

[Fawzi] well, at one point, almost everyone in the studio had a pony avatar on their IM
[Gustav] As well as pony toys on EVERYONES desk ☺

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic has created a huge world full of fun, relatable, and adorable characters. It tells special stories each week about morals and values while delivering a fun experience filled with pop culture references and great animations. We’re curious, what do you think of the show? When did you first experience it?

[Gustav] Well I wasn’t aware of the current series and only vaguely aware of the brony subculture. But once we started development and I watched the show as part of the research, I really saw and understood the popularity of the new series and the magic that Lauren Faust brought to the franchise. My fiancé and I became instant fans of the show and watched all the episodes. My favorite part would be the iconic personalities that the show creates and how everyone invariably relates to their favorite pony. (Mine are Rainbow Dash and Pinky Pie ☺)

Give us the inside scoop! What was the biggest challenge you encountered when creating the game?

[Fawzi serious] The biggest challenge was the young target audience. It was important for us, from the start, to design a game that can be picked up and enjoyed easily and that would be fun for fans as well as players new to the brand. We wanted it to introduce new players to the My Little Pony universe independently.

[Gustav] Making sure the game is clear and understandable to as wide an audience as possible, was a real challenge.

We love the “Magic Wings” mini-game! It’s cool that we get to see all the ponies fly, not just the Pegasus ponies. What did you have in mind when you decided to implement this feature?

[Fawzi] Whenever considering a design feature for the game, we pulled inspiration directly from the show and the pony universe. We liked the freedom that the Pegasus ponies have and how Rainbow Dash is able to maintain the weather by removing clouds, so we thought it would been cool if ALL the ponies could help. What better way to do that than by using magic to give everyone wings!

Deadly swordsmen & martial artists, BLADEMASTERS also wield impressive magic, making them unmatched in solo combat. These fast melee fighters excel at killing a single target in close-combat. The only character class that can dodge attacks, these expert swordsmen can also counter melee attacks. It is said that once their gaze is fixed on a victim, they track them down relentlessly until they can achieve their goal: elimination of the target.

The best archers in Valenthia, SENTINELS can move quickly, lay traps, & debilitate their enemies from afar. They rely on speed and distance to take out their foes and posses the ability to evade enemy attacks by dashing away from the action. They are reputed to be able to lose several arrows before the first hits its mark.

Masters of arcane destruction, WARMAGES are trained in combat & the mystic arts. They rely on their shooting staffs to knock out opponents and magic orbs to increase their magical energy. Much like the Sentinel, this class works better from a large range rather than fighting in the thick of the battle. They are fragile, but can block enemy attacks with magic and keep things at a distance.

If you want to follow suit and switch your attack buttons & thumbstick around, just go to: Settings > Settings (yes two settings) > Customize HUD and simply drag and drop the buttons around until they feel right to you. You can create different schemes for each character if you do play as different character types.

The Iron Man 3 game takes place after the film but you should be safe from spoilers so no worries about playing it before seeing the flick! You can also upgrade your armor and powers in the research lab so don’t forget to take the occasional break from the high-flying action to try out new suits and upgrade your current tech.
